We see that all the time in the UFC. There's fighters that are on the cusp of making it that kills themselves trying to get there and either succeed or fail and then there's occasions like this when the fighter is so far off that they save their strength for the fight instead and take the loss in purse money.
Clearly the latter in this case if you ask me. Like I said he didn't seem like he's had any adverse effects at all, did not look drained.
