Phogat has a background in Freestyle Wrestling, being the daughter of former wrestler Mahavir Singh Phogat who started training her since she was age 8. Her cousins Priyanka and Vinesh Phogat aswell as her sisters Geeta and Babita are also elite level wrestling medalists. Some of her achievements include winning the Indian National Wrestling Championship title, the silver medal at the 2017 World Under 23's Wrestling championships, the bronze medal at the 2017 Asian Wrestling Championships, and the gold medal at the 2016 Commonwealth Wrestling Championships.
